For his light installations Yochai Matos uses standard long fluorescent tube light bulbs, the kind one can find in anonymous institutional spaces. Taking figurative or abstract forms, they retain a certain sentimental quality that relates to adolescent memories. These fluorescent lights are the kind used in classrooms and they carry a distinctive sentiment. They make urban, autobiographical and political landscapes. Unlike Dan Flavin's evacuated fluorescent pieces, Yochai's installations are embedded in the world. When he designs a jet fighter or when he installs a twelve meter high construction in the middle of the woods from fluorescents, he creates portals to other spaces while committing to the specificity of the installation's surrounding site.
