Nogah Engler‘s vast hybrid forest landscape paintings show woodlands in various perspectives. Using photographs she took when visiting the Ukraine, juxtaposed with elements from Flemish Renaissance paintings, Engler’s landscapes are literally landmarks –landscapes marked by traumatic memory. Her works tread between a feeling of tranquillity and suspense, deploying introspective landscapes, dissolving like a Rorschach test. The traumatic history these woods carry includes the snow that covers parts of the canvas; moving from the pictorial to the concrete surface, these hybrid landscapes reveal a path at times, an aligned perspective that suggests a direction.
